Sure, there has been a Meebo IM module for NetVibes, and also a NetVibes EcoSystem Jabber widget, but Alex Little’s MSG-for-NetVibes provides some nice extras:
- MSG is completely open source, AJAX-based, and very stripped down for simplicity
- Provides optional geolocation via Google Maps (better than GTalk!)
- Includes separate map widget code
What you can see in the reduced image on the right is a typical NetVibes page, with the embeddable MSG widget along the left, showing my current contact list.
Our own MSG server happens to be built on OpenFire (you can use any Jabber/XMPP server, in fact). Within OpenFire, it is easy to turn on the standard ‘transports’, notably AIM, Yahoo, and MSN, so in my MSG widget all my other contact lists are harmoniously accessible too.
Alex is also experimenting with similar embedding in other environments, so check out the MSG blog, Alex’s blog, and stay tuned!
Oh, while you’re at it, don’t forget the OpenLearn LearningSpace environment which provides the primary home for MSG!
