I blogged previously about Austin Tate at Edinburgh’s Aritificial Intelligence Applications Institute being intested in Second Life. They’ve set up their stall now, with a page announcing AIAI2 on SL.
The Artificial Intelligence Applications Institute (AIAI) in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh is just establishing an office in Second Life. This will be used to explore technology transfer and AI applications in Virtual Community Sims. Watch this space for more details as the project becomes established.
Will definitely be watching that space!

Readers might be interested to see how our efforts in Second Life have come along… we have been using the objects at our “AIAI2″ area to link up with programs running outside of the Second Life environment through XML-RPC and HTTP technologies. Check oiut our progress and see some images of our offices at

Hi,
My name is Hugh O’Donnell and I am a teacher of English at Dunoon Grammar School.
After a couple of months in Second Life, I’ve created a groundswell of support and
have now instructed the purchase of our very own island; the educational benefits predicted
are phenomenal.
However, there are – obviously – serious concerns re. student activity & safety on-line, and our local
authority would like some comfort from UK-based institutions using Second Life. I am aware of the
activities that are now being conducted in Second Life by The Open University.
I am aware that we can control access to the island, as well as the induction process of both pupils
and staff, and what I would appreciate is some ‘assistance’ in addressing some of these issues.
Thanks in advance
Hugh O’Donnell
